CLDSA Awards evening
The CLDSA held a very successful function last night where the achievements
of swimmers were honoured. A new committee was unanimously elected and Tony Scalabrino, who was not available for re-election, received a special plaque to thank him for his 22 years of service to CLDSA.
We were honoured to have as special guests, Brian Reynolds who is president of WP Aquatics and Allen Morrison, president of WP Masters Swimming - pool swimming and open water swimming complement each other and we trust that this liaison continues in the future. Also in attendance was Daantjie "Streepsak:" - willing Robben Island skipper of note, who is battling with ill health. He was aptly nicknamed by Herda because of the bag that he wraps hypothermic swimmers in! Also in attendance were the Fialkov's, dad the
coach extraordinaire and son the founder of the Polar Bear Club (monthly Sunday Clifton Mile). Gary Freeling was also there to support swimmers who he is coaxing into both pool and open water participation. Cecilia Stanford, now an ex-coach, and fresh from her extraordinary achievements at the FINA World Masters Swimming Champs) had the honour of kissing all the hunks when they came up for their awards.
People who made the evening possible were thanked on the night, but just to add a big thanks to Kay Bales and Michelle Sellmeyer for their endless
efforts to helps their husbands in the organisation of the CLDSA. Their
support and commitment to open water swimming is awesome!
Attached please find the open water swimming calendar (a local one and one
incl all the important national and international events). Don't forget the
ASHANTI MILE on 04 November! (details on the calendar) Also visit www.orangeriverchallenge.co.za from next week to track the progress of the
intrepid relay swimmers..
Yours in swimming
